The Wild West

Western Australia takes up half of the country's surface with only a fraction of its population: a dream for anyone interested in venturing off the beaten track. Here are some of our favourites.

Abrolhos Islands, an archipelago off the coast near Geraldton, is home to shipwrecks such as the Batavia and the Zuytdorp, and to stories of their survivors and their ghosts. In spite of this, a small community of crayfishermen and pearl farmers spend a good part of their year on the islands.

Lake Ballard, a salt lake near Menzies in the goldfields is home to a community of statues 'Inside Australia' by Anthony Gormley. It's a long way from everywhere but worth the trip.
